A Thought for Today 30-03-2012

Isaiah 53:4-5

And yet ours were the sufferings he bore, ours the sorrows he carried. But we, we thought of him as someone punished, struck by God, and brought low. Yet he was pierced through for our faults, crushed for our sins. On him lies a punishment that brings us peace, and through his wounds we are healed.

How quickly we forget God's great deliverances in our lives. How easily we take for granted the miracles he performed in our past.

A Thought for Today 29-03-2012

Hebrews 7:26-27

The ideal high priest would have to be holy, innocent and uncontaminated, beyond the influence of sinners, and raised up above the heavens; one who would not need to offer sacrifices every day, as the other high priests do for their own sins and then for those of the people, because Jesus Christ our Lord has done this once and for all by offering himself.

God is not disillusioned with us. He never had any illusions to begin with.

A Thought for Today 28-03-2012

Hebrews 9:28

Christ offers himself only once to take the faults of many on himself, and when he appears a second time, it will not be to deal with sin but to reward with salvation those who are waiting for him.

Nothing is more common than for men to think that because they are familiar with words they understand the ideas they stand for.

1 Peter 5:8-9

Be calm and vigilant, because your enemy the devil is prowling round like a roaring lion, looking for someone to eat. Stand up to him, strong in faith.

I have had more trouble with myself than with any other man.
(Dwight L. Moody)

1 Thessalonians 5:9-10

God chose us to win salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that, alive or dead, we should still live united to him.

God doesn't seek for golden vessels, and does not ask for silver ones, but He must have clean ones.

Jeremiah 14:9

Lord, you are in our midst, we are called by your name. Do not desert us, O Lord our God!

We can stand affliction better than we can prosperity, for in prosperity we forget God.

1 Thessalonians 5:23

May the God of peace make you perfect and holy; and may you all be kept safe and blameless, spirit, soul and body, for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We talk about heaven being so far away. It is within speaking distance to those who belong there. Heaven is a prepared place for a prepared people.

Ephesians 4:26-27

Even if you are angry, you must not sin: never let the sun set on your anger, or else you will give the devil a foothold.

Anger makes dull men witty, but it keeps them poor.

Isaiah 58:1-2

Shout for all you are worth, raise your voice like a trumpet. Proclaim their faults to my people, their sins to the House of Jacob. They seek me day after day, they long to know my ways, like a nation that wants to act with integrity and not ignore the law of its God.

James 1:27

In the eyes of God our Father, pure unspoilt religion is this: coming to the help of orphans and widows when they need it, and keeping oneself uncontaminated by the world.

Images contaminate us like viruses.

Hebrews 10:35-36

Continue to have confidence, since the reward is so great. You will need endurance to do God’s will and gain what he has promised.

Faith is a living, daring confidence in God's grace, so sure and certain that a man could stake his life on it a thousand times.

Joel 2:17

Between vestibule and altar let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, lament. Let them say, ‘Spare your people, O Lord! Do not make your heritage a thing of shame, a byword for the nations.’

Discernment is God's call to intercession, never to faultfinding.

Wisdom 11:23-24

Lord, you are merciful to all, because you can do all things and overlook men’s sins so that they can repent. Yes, you love all that exists, you hold in abhorrence nothing of what you have made.

God judged it better to bring good out of evil than to suffer no evil to exist.

A Thought for Today 05-03-2012

Isaiah 58:6,7

Is not this the sort of fast that pleases me – it is the Lord who speaks – to share your bread with the hungry, and shelter the homeless poor, to clothe the man you see to be naked and not turn from your own kin?

A fast is not a hunger strike. Fasting submits to God's commands. A hunger strike makes God submit to our demands.
